70 Alligators on the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive

Now that we are home in The Villages, FL for awhile, we've decided to spend some time exploring our amazing home state. This weekend we decided to try the Yalaha Bakery and the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive.

The Yalaha Bakery is a German Bakery located southeast of The Villages, FL. It took us about 40 minutes to get there from our house. You can choose from items in the bakery or order a meal from the deli. We enjoyed a turkey and cheese croissant from the bakery and the Nurnberger Breakfast from the deli. If you come on the weekends after 12 pm you can also enjoy music in the biergarten. From there we drove another 40 minutes down to the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive.

The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive is an educational and fun way to experience the wildlife in Central Florida. The 11 mile drive is one way and is open Friday- Sunday from sunrise to sunset. We took our big camera and stopped often to take pictures. It took us about 1.5 hours to complete the drive. There are also some opportunities to get out and walk around a bit but beware the alligators! While on our drive we saw over 70 gators! We also saw a lot of birds and plant life.

Don't miss out on the audio tour. This is an interesting way to learn about the St. Johns River Water Management restoration project at Lake Apopka. At only a little over an hour from our home in The Villages, FL, this was a great day trip for us and is highly recommended.
