Hiking “The Island” In Central Florida

The Island is an historical curiosity in Central Florida. Located between Belleview and Ocala, The Island is literally part of a large median on highway 441. Parking is located behind the Sherriff's office in the grass. This easy one-mile hike is part of the larger Cross Florida Greenway which is dedicated to the abandoned Cross Florida Barge Canal.

Along the hike you will encounter 4 large pillars along with the history of the Cross Florida Canal. The pillars were constructed as part of the canal project before the project was stopped by President Nixon in 1971 over growing environmental concerns. Congress finally deauthorized the project in 1990.

During our hike we decided to check and see if there were any geocaching opportunities and we found 3. One of them was a simple box to open. 2 of the geocaching boxes had puzzles to solve which added to the complexity and fun of our adventure.

Overall, we found this stop to be an easy one hour adventure full of history and treasure hunting.
