Repairing an RV Atwood Water Heater With Limited Access

Sometimes RV manufacturers install equipment that will need future service in places that are almost impossible to access.

In one instance, the customer had a bad heating element on an Atwood water heater. To get to the element in the back of the tank we could pull the entire water heater which would have required some plumbing and electrical rework as well as resealing the exterior of the RV (about a 3 hour project start to finish.)

Instead, with the customer's consent, we decided to remove a fixed cabinet panel in the RV kitchen to gain access to the back of the Atwood water heater to replace the element (about 1/2 the time requirement.)

This panel could easily have been installed as removable using magnetic or Velcro strips, or 1/4 turn clasps installed on the back side of the panel. However the manufacture installed the panel with both glue and brads making it very difficult to access the equipment for service without completely removing the water heater.

The customer opted to reinstall the panel using some cleats to secure the panel in place while still allowing for future service access.
