Tips for Handling Solar Controllers & Chargers

Writer: Jonathan MillerJonathan Miller

If possible, isolate the solar panels from the electrical system prior to service, or cover the panels to prevent light from hitting them, so that they won’t produce any voltage while you are working on the connected equipment.

Connect batteries before connecting solar panels to solar controllers and chargers. This allows the battery demand to limit the flow of voltage through the controller and in a properly designed system will help prevent damage to your solar controller.

Always disconnect the neutral wire first and reconnect it last.

Make sure your charger is set for the correct type of batteries Lead Acid, Gel, AGM, LiPO4, etc.
