Badlands National Park

Where the Painted Desert Meets the Prairie

Located about 2 hours East of Custer, no trip to South Dakota is complete without a trip to Badlands National Park.

We drove across I-90 and entered from the Northeast Entrance. The Badlands Loop Road runs from the Northeast Entrance to the Pinnacle Entrance. This iconic drive offers many opportunities to pull off for beautiful overlooks and vistas. If you want to stay on paved roads you can exit at the Pinnacles Hwy 240 up to I-90.

We opted to continue our drive through the park down the gravel Sage Creek Rim Road to the paved South or Stronghold Unit of the park. On this part of the drive we saw Prairie Dogs, Bison and a Coyote.

We had cell phone service throughout the park which was nice because our Autio for Auto app told us many stories and legends about the park and surrounding areas as we drove.
