Bandelier National Monument

Learning the Difference Between a National Park and a National Monument

I just learned that the main difference between a National Park and a National monument is that a National Park has scenic or recreational value. A National Monument has cultural or historical value.

Not understanding the difference, I wasn’t sure what to expect as we drove to Bandelier National Monument. I was expecting to drive up, take a few pictures and read a historical plaque and then drive on with our day. As soon as we pulled into the park service area, I knew this was going to be more than we had anticipated.

There are 3 miles of roads and over 70 miles of trails. Camping and picnic tables are also available. We went at the beginning of March right after a snowfall and enjoyed the cooler weather.

We highly recommend the one and a half mile hike to the Cliff Dwellings as well as the 1 mile additional hike to the Long House. If you’re comfortable climbing ladders, you will really enjoy seeing the inside of the caves where the Pueblo people lived. Be sure to look out for the rock carvings along the bluff as you walk toward the Long House.
