Petroglyph National Monument

New Mexico's Heritage in the middle of Alberquerque

Petroglyph National Monument is a preservation of drawings and carvings that are said to have been made by the Navajo and Apache peoples. Spanning 17 miles, you could easily spend a day or two exploring the volcanic ruins.

We chose to hike the 1.5 Piedras Marcadas Canyon loop that features 400 drawings and carvings in the volcanic rocks. This loop is open sunrise to sunset and is accessed by a small parking lot in a residential neighborhood area. The neighborhoods have been built right up next to the National Monument area. We visited this site in March and we were very comfortable hiking in the cooler weather as the sun was setting.
