Voyageurs National Park

A Northern Minnesaota National Park

Located in Northern Minnesota along the water boundry between the United States and Canada, Voyageurs National Park is a nod to our heritage of exploration. 40% water, this park is best explored by boat.

We packed a lunch and rented our pontoon boat from Voyageurs Sunrise Resort near the Kabetogama Visitors Center. With just a day trip in mind, we were able to easily explore a very good portion of the many lakes that make up Voyageurs. If you are up for it, you can also rent a houseboat and camp at many of the beachy or wooded areas on the lakes.

Some of the most popular places to visit are the Ellsworth Rock Gardens and the famous Kettle Falls. If you make it to Kettle Falls you can choose to stay overnight at the hotel, grab a meal from the restaurant or a drink from the bar or even play a game of pool on the uneven floor of the bar. When in the bar, make sure and look under the seats of the booths for a funny surprise.

Our favorite thing at Voyaguers National Park was actually a waterfall adventure just outside the park boundaries.  We grabbed our 2 person inflatable kayak and headed up the Ash River about 2.5 miles from our RV park to the Ash River Falls. We had low expectations and were thoroughly surprised at these magnificent falls cascading over boulder rocks. We parked the kayak on a flat rock bed and climbed through the forest to the top of the falls. At the bottom of the falls and in the river, fishermen were easily catching small mouth bass. Further down the river the fishermen were catching walleye and northern pike.
