Antelope Island State Park
Roaming Bison In The Middle Of The Great Salt Lake
Antelope Island, located right outside of Salt Lake City along the east side of the Great Salt Lake is a beautiful tribute to untouched nature. The island is home to roaming bison, big horn sheep, mule deer and antelope as well as a variety of birds. There is a beach with direct access to Great Salt Lake as well as several camgrounds for those wishing to stay overnight. Be careful, in early June we found the area to have a lot of flys, gnats and mosquitos that may deter from an enjoyable overnight experience. We enjoyed walking to the beach near Bridger Bay. After checking out the lake and the rest of the camping areas, we drove the 11 mile East Side Ranch Road. Along this road we encountered hundreds of free range bison enjoying the coolness of the lake along Farmington Bay. There are a lot of hiking opportunities on the island but be sure to pack lots of water and sunscreen as there is very little shade on the island. Overall we enjoyed our day at Antelope Island State Park.
