Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The Prairie and Badlands of North Dakota

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located along the Western side of North Dakota. Created in honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, this National Park is a testament to his own dedication to conservation and naturalism.

Divided into 2 sections, there is plenty to explore. The South Unit is easily accessed from the historical town of Medora. This section contains one loop road with several hiking trails and scenic overlooks. You can also access the Petrified Forest part of the South Unit via dirt roads and hiking trails just 30 minutes from Medora.

The North Unit is about an hour from the South Unit. The most common route to the North Unit is 95 East to 85 North. The drive is a pleasant road through the prairie land. The North Unit contains one out and back 14 mile road. There are many overlooks, pull offs and trails along the road. We found the North Unit very interesting and highly worth the time and the drive. One of the most intersting things for us was the Cannonball Concretions. These unique, other worldly looking rock formations are being exposed due to erosion.
