City of Rocks National Reserve and Castle Rocks State Park

Another Reason We Love State Parks!

Nestled in the southern part of Idaho, just a few miles from the Utah border, City of Rocks National Preserve protects a unique portion of the California Trail. The promise of land and the discovery of gold brought over 200,000 emigrants out west following the California Trail through the City of Rocks.

These days, the City of Rocks and Castle Rocks State Park offers more than just a history lesson. This area attracts world class rock climbers attempting the moderate to advanced rock climbing routes throughout the parks. The parks also offer hiking and camping. I did a bit of rock scrambling myself, and at age (almost) 50, I felt pretty proud as I made my way towards the top of Castle Rock!

We stayed in our 43’ 5th wheel in the Smoky Mountain Campground which is part of Castle Rocks State Park but located closer to the City of Rocks National Preserve. The quiet and natural setting was a perfect long weekend getaway from our usual fast paced travel. Inside City of Rocks itself are many tent camping spots located sporadically throughout the area. These camping spots offer spectacular views and a serene atmosphere.

We highly recommend a stop at City of Rocks and Castle Rocks on your ultimate Idaho road trip.
