Point Pelee National Park

Canada's Southernmost Mainland Point

From our campsite at Sterling State Park, just south of Detroit, Michigan, it is about an hour and 45 minutes to Point Pelee National Park in Canada. We crossed the border in Detroit with only our passports and no problems whatsoever.

We got the family yearly pass for all Canadian National Parks and drove straight to the Marsh Boardwalk. This was a super easy .62 mile loop boardwalk. According to their signs, 25% of all of the marshlands in the world are in Canada. Marshlands are considered the liver or filter of the environment. We saw turtles, blue herring, bald eagles, ducks, fish, butterflies and blue dragonflies.

Point Pelee is the southernmost point of mainland Canada.  From the Boardwalk we drove to the visitors center. There is an interactive nature display, children’s corner, restrooms, an information booth and a store. In the store they sold fresh “birdseed cookies for humans” that are absolutely delicious and we highly recommend. From the visitors center we grabbed the free shuttle ride to the tip which took about 10 minutes.

Point Pelee juts out into Lake Erie, which is the shallowest and smallest of the Great Lakes.  One side of the tip is completely still while the waves crash along the beach on the other side.  The walk out to the tip is about 1/2 mile each way. Some of it is through the forest and some is sand along the beach. Overall it is a very easy hike.

We enjoyed our day trip to Point Peele and would recommend it.
